The KENNAMETAL 1162394 is a TPMT32.51LF-style solid carbide turning insert with KC850 grade and a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN. The triangular insert provides three cutting edges and is designed for finishing and light machining operations on steel and stainless steel. Key geometry includes a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, a 60-degree included angle, and an 11-degree relief angle with a positive rake. The LF chip breaker is optimized for low cutting forces in finish-pass applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in screw-on toolholders on turning centers and boring bars.
This insert is suited for finishing passes and light material removal on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and select superalloys. The KC850 grade delivers moderate wear resistance balanced with toughness, making it appropriate across ISO material classes P, M, K, and S. Typical applications include OD turning, facing, and boring on both horizontal and vertical turning centers. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches), confirming this insert is intended for light, precision work rather than roughing cuts.
Designed for use in screw-on TPMT-style toolholders. ANSI insert code TPMT3251; ISO insert code TPMT16T304. Compatible with multi-use turning, facing, and boring applications across ISO workpiece material classes P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), and S (special and superalloys).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and de-energize the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the screw-on clamp to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and edge geometry.
