The KENNAMETAL 1162288 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert in the VBGT220.5LF configuration, designed for precision finishing and light machining operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a honed cutting edge, producing clean, consistent surface finishes at tight tolerances. The K68 grade delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it well suited for non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloys. The screw-on holding method provides secure seating in compatible toolholders. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators in precision turning environments.
The 1162288 is intended for finishing and light machining passes where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are the priority. Rated for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations, it fits a wide range of lathe and machining center applications in both job shop and production settings. Primary workpiece material codes are P, M, K, N, and S, covering carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, and superalloys including titanium. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for light chip loads typical of finishing passes. Suitable for residential machine shops and industrial production environments alike.
Designed as a screw-on replacement turning insert conforming to ANSI insert code VBGT2205 and ISO insert code VBGT110302. Compatible with toolholders designed for VBGT-style inserts with a 0.1102-inch screw hole diameter and screw-on clamping. Verify toolholder specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque driver for the insert screw to ensure proper seating without over-torquing the carbide. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before installing a new insert, and confirm the cutting edge orientation matches the intended operation direction.
