The KENNAMETAL 1162229 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ANSI designation VBGT332HP and ISO code VBGT160408. Manufactured to grade K313 with a bright, uncoated finish, this insert is designed for high-precision finishing operations on lathes and turning centers. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape combined with a positive rake angle of 15 degrees and a honed cutting edge style delivers clean, consistent cuts in demanding materials. At 16.61 mm in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius, it suits tight-tolerance work where surface finish is critical. Installation is via screw-on holding method. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers of this type of insert.
This insert is suited for finishing passes on non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. Its HP chip breaker geometry is optimized for fine finishing where chip control and surface finish quality are the priority. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both right-hand and left-hand turning applications. Typical operations include turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine fully powered down and all moving components at rest. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide body. Inspect the toolholder seat and clamping components for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Index to the second cutting edge only after confirming the first edge is fully worn to avoid premature discard.
