The KENNAMETAL 1162005 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI code TCGT3251HP and ISO code TCGT16T304, designed for high-precision finishing operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The insert features a PVD-applied TiN coating under the KC730 grade, which delivers high wear resistance combined with moderate toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The triangular (T) insert shape provides three cutting edges and mounts via screw-on holding method. It has a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, a 1/64 inch corner radius (0.0156 inches), and a 7-degree relief angle with positive rake geometry. Insert length is 0.6496 inches (16.50 mm) and thickness is 5/32 inches (0.1563 inches).
This insert is suited for finishing passes in turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes used in job shops, production machining, and maintenance environments. It is particularly effective when machining steel (P-grade), stainless steel (M-grade), and cast iron (K-grade) components. The HP chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). The positive rake angle of 15 degrees reduces cutting forces, making it a practical choice for light-duty finishing on both rigid and moderately compliant setups. Machinists and CNC programmers working to tight tolerances will recognize the G tolerance classification, which ensures consistent insert-to-insert dimensional accuracy.
Designed for use in standard TCGT screw-on insert toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch inscribed circle triangular insert. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and cast iron workpieces per the KC730 grade specification.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Before indexing or replacing the insert, power down and lock out the machine spindle per applicable shop lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully on the toolholder pocket and tighten the screw-on fastener to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the cutting edge and seat for debris or damage before resuming cuts. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping the honed edge prior to use.
