The KENNAMETAL 1162003 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TCGT21505HP configuration, finished with a PVD-applied TiN coating under the KC730 grade designation. It features a 60-degree triangular shape with a positive rake angle of 15 degrees and a positive side clearance, making it well suited for finishing operations where surface quality and tool life are priorities. The insert measures 11 millimeters (0.4331 inches) in length with an inscribed circle of 0.25 inches and a corner radius of 0.0079 inches (1/128 inch). The screw-on holding method keeps the insert securely indexed in compatible toolholders. Three cutting edges are available per insert.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KC730 grade is characterized by high wear resistance paired with moderate toughness, giving it a broad working range across P (steel), M (stainless steel), and K (cast iron) material classifications. It is suited for light finishing cuts with a maximum depth of cut of 1.25 millimeters (0.0492 inches). The HP chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing passes where chip control and dimensional accuracy matter most. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers.
Designed for use in screw-on style TCGT toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code TCGT21505 and ISO insert code TCGT110202. Suited for OEM and aftermarket toolholders accepting a 0.1102-inch (2.80 millimeter) mounting hole diameter in the T-style triangular insert seat.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians following standard insert-indexing procedures. Power down and de-energize the machine spindle completely before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamping screw - do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide body. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating a fresh insert.
