The KENNAMETAL 1161968 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBGT331HP geometry with a KC730 grade and PVD-applied TiN coating. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, a positive rake angle of 15 degrees, and a 5-degree relief angle. The insert is 16.61 mm (approximately 0.654 inches) long with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The HP chip breaker is optimized for finishing operations, delivering high wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. It mounts via screw-on holding method and offers two cutting edges per insert.
This insert is suited for finishing passes in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. Its positive side clearance and honed cutting edge style make it appropriate for light-to-moderate cuts on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KC730 grade is engineered for high wear resistance with adequate toughness, making it a practical choice for production machining environments where surface finish and tool life consistency are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shop and manufacturing settings are the primary users.
Designed as a screw-on replacement insert for VBGT-style toolholders conforming to ANSI VBGT331 and ISO VBGT160404 standards. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 35-degree diamond insert with screw-on clamping. Verify toolholder bore and clamp compatibility before ordering.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert. Follow your facility safety procedures and applicable ANSI B11 machine tool safety standards during tooling changes.
