The KENNAMETAL 1161953 is a solid carbide turning insert with a TPGT triangular geometry and KC730 grade, PVD-applied TiN coating. It carries the ANSI designation TPGT3251HP and ISO designation TPGT16T304. Designed for finishing operations, it features a positive rake angle of 15 degrees, an 11-degree relief angle, and a honed cutting edge style. The HP chip breaker geometry supports tight chip control at light depths of cut. With three usable cutting edges and a screw-on holding method, this insert suits high-wear-resistance applications on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians on turning, facing, and boring operations.
This insert is intended for finishing passes on steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpieces, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium (S, M). The HP chip breaker targets fine surface finishes at low-to-moderate feed rates. It fits screw-on style toolholders accepting a TPGT triangular insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Typical applications include external turning, facing, and internal boring on CNC lathes and turning centers in precision machining environments. The maximum recommended depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm).
Designed for screw-on style TPGT toolholders accepting a triangular insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Confirmed suitable for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces per ANSI and ISO standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-on clamping screw to avoid cracking the carbide substrate - do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a new cutting edge.
