The KENNAMETAL 1161879 is a solid carbide turning insert designated SPGT432LF in the KC730 grade, designed for high-performance metal cutting in turning, facing, and boring applications. The insert features a square shape with a 90-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch (0.0313 inch) corner radius. The KC730 grade uses a PVD-applied TiN coating that provides high wear resistance while maintaining toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining operations. This insert uses a screw-on holding method and delivers four usable cutting edges per insert.
This insert is suited for finishing and light machining passes on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The positive rake angle of 5 degrees and honed cutting edge style reduce cutting forces and help produce consistent surface finishes at controlled depths. The maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inch (1.25 mm), placing this insert firmly in finishing-pass territory. It is appropriate for both CNC and manual turning setups where the tool holder accepts screw-on SPGT-style inserts. Machinists working with superalloys and titanium will also find the KC730 grade suitable based on its wear-resistance and toughness profile.
Designed for use in screw-on SPGT-style tool holders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle square insert with a 0.2165-inch hole diameter. Compatible with turning, facing, and boring operations per the multi-use application designation.
This insert is installed by a machinist or tool crib technician using the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw — consult the tool holder manufacturer torque specification for the correct value. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for this geometry during finishing operations.
