The KENNAMETAL 1161866 is a solid carbide indexable turning insert with ANSI designation SPMT432MF and ISO designation SPMT120408, coated with TiN via PVD process. It carries the KC730 manufacturer grade, which is engineered for high to moderate wear-resistance and toughness across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. The insert features a 90-degree square shape, a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0313-inch corner radius, and a 0.1875-inch thickness. With four cutting edges, a positive rake geometry, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style, this insert is suited for finishing and medium machining operations. It is installed via screw-on holding method and is intended for use by machinists and CNC turning specialists.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The MF chip breaker geometry makes it well-suited for finishing passes and light to medium material removal where controlled chip formation and surface finish are priorities. The positive side clearance and positive rake angle reduce cutting forces, which is beneficial when machining difficult-to-cut materials. The KC730 grade provides wear-resistance characteristics consistent with P, M, and K workpiece material classifications per ISO standards. Typical applications include external and internal turning on CNC lathes and turning centers in production and job-shop environments.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Before indexing or replacing the insert, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured. Clean the insert pocket and seating surfaces before mounting to ensure proper seating and edge alignment. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw, as over-tightening can damage the insert or pocket.
