The KENNAMETAL 1161845 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in demanding CNC and manual lathe applications. Designated DCMT32.51MF under ANSI coding and DCMT11T304 under ISO, this insert carries a KC730 grade with a PVD-applied TiN coating that delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape provides a sharp, stable cutting geometry. With a positive rake angle, chamfered and honed cutting edge, and MF chip breaker, this insert is optimized for finishing and medium machining passes. It features two usable cutting edges and is held by a screw-on mounting method. Licensed machinists and CNC operators typically specify this insert for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations.
This insert is suited for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KC730 grade is characterized by high to moderate wear resistance combined with moderate toughness, making it a strong choice for production environments where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The neutral hand orientation allows flexible use across compatible toolholders. The MF chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip control at finishing and light-to-medium feed rates, reducing the risk of chip packing or surface damage on precision components.
Designed for use in DCMT-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards for 55-degree diamond turning inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle (size code 3251 / 11T304).
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key for the clamping screw and ensure the insert pocket and locating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's guidelines for screw torque and insert orientation to maintain dimensional accuracy and prevent insert movement under cutting load.
