The KENNAMETAL 1161296 is a CNMS642 series solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in industrial CNC turning, facing, and boring operations. Built to ANSI and ISO standards, it features a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN applied through a chemical vapor deposition process. This coating system is the basis for the KC850 grade, which delivers a balance of moderate wear resistance and toughness across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert has an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a honed cutting edge style. It is installed and serviced by machinists and CNC toolroom technicians.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and special or super alloys. The KENLOC series designation indicates compatibility with KENNAMETAL KENLOC-style toolholders that use clamp and pin insert-holding methods. The KC850 grade targets medium machining conditions where the operator needs reliable toughness without sacrificing wear resistance. Its negative rake and negative side clearance geometry are standard for CNMS-style inserts seated in negative-rake toolholder pockets. The chip breaker geometry is rated for common medium-machining operations, making it a general-purpose choice across production turning environments.
Designed for use in KENNAMETAL KENLOC-style toolholders that accept CNMS642 inserts with clamp and pin holding methods. Conforms to ANSI insert code CNMS642 and ISO insert code CNMS190608, allowing fitment verification against standard toolholder specifications.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Before changing inserts, power down the machine and confirm the spindle is fully stopped. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert clamp and pin. Inspect the insert pocket and locating surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert breakage.
