The KENNAMETAL 1161289 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMP543 geometry, part of the KENLOC series. It features a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under the KC850 grade designation, providing moderate wear resistance and toughness across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape and negative rake geometry make it well suited for stable, high-load cutting passes. With a 5/8-inch inscribed circle and a 3/64-inch corner radius, this insert is sized for medium-to-heavy turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and conventional lathes. It delivers 4 cutting edges per insert, improving cost efficiency per edge in production environments.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and select special or super alloys. Its chip breaker geometry targets medium machining conditions, making it a practical choice for general production turning in job shops, aerospace component machining, and heavy manufacturing. The neutral hand designation means it is compatible with toolholders designed for either right- or left-hand orientation as specified by ANSI and ISO standards. Qualified machinists and CNC setup technicians are the primary installers. The insert is sold individually but requires a minimum order of 5 pieces.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMP543 ANSI geometry inserts with clamp or pin holding methods. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against ANSI and ISO CNMP160612 standards before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screws specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamp components for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
