The KENNAMETAL 1160920 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMS331 geometry, designed for precision metal removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a neutral hand orientation and a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) TiN coating in the KC730 grade. The KC730 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it well suited for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. The cutting edge is honed for consistent performance, and the chip breaker is optimized for medium machining operations. Four available cutting edges extend tool life and reduce per-edge cost. The insert seats in KENLOC-style toolholders using clamp and pin holding methods.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications. The VNMS331 geometry with a negative rake angle and negative side clearance is appropriate for interrupted and continuous cuts on steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece materials. Secondary workpiece material suitability extends to stainless steel and superalloys. Typical users include CNC machinists and toolroom operators working in precision manufacturing, job shops, and production environments. The maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), which positions this insert for finishing and light semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting VNMS331 inserts with clamp and pin holding. Conforms to ANSI insert code VNMS331 and ISO insert code VNMS160404, allowing fitment in any toolholder system specified for those standards.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate KENLOC clamp and pin hardware to seat the insert fully before torquing the clamp screw; do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamp torque. Inspect the insert pocket and locating pin for wear or debris before seating a new edge.
