Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 1160890 is a VNGP332K KC730 solid carbide turning insert with a PVD-applied TiN coating, designed for high-production metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius, making it well suited for precision turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations. The KC730 grade delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpiece materials. Installation is performed by machinists and toolroom technicians using clamp and pin holding methods in KENLOC-compatible toolholders.

This insert is intended for use in industrial machining environments where consistent surface finish and tool life are priorities. It carries a neutral hand orientation and a negative rake angle of 10 degrees with a negative side clearance, which supports stable chip formation during interrupted and continuous cuts. The K chip breaker geometry and honed cutting edge style contribute to controlled chip flow at shallow-to-moderate depths of cut up to 0.049 inches (1.25 mm). It is applicable to steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and superalloy and titanium (S) workpiece material groups per ISO classification.

Key Features

  • KC730 PVD TiN-coated solid carbide grade with high wear resistance for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron
  • 35-degree diamond (VNGP) insert shape with 4 cutting edges for extended tool economy
  • K chip breaker geometry with honed cutting edge for controlled chip flow
  • Negative rake and negative side clearance for stable cutting under clamp and pin holding
  • Maximum depth of cut 1.25 mm (0.049 inches)
  • Multi-use application: turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring

Compatibility

Designed for use in KENLOC-compatible toolholders that accept VNGP-style inserts with clamp and pin holding. Conforms to ANSI insert code VNGP332 and ISO insert code VNGP160408.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or clamp screw driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp and pin; do not overtighten by feel alone. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before placing a new insert to ensure proper seating and accurate indexing.
