The KENNAMETAL 1160889 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNGP331K geometry, coated with TiN via a PVD process and assigned the KC730 manufacturer grade. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a negative rake angle of 10 degrees. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inches, insert length is approximately 1.308 inches (16.61 mm), thickness is 3/16 inches, and corner radius is 1/64 inches. With four cutting edges and a honed cutting edge style, this insert delivers high wear-resistance with moderate toughness across multiple turning operations. It is installed by machinists and CNC turning technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is designed for use in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations. The KC730 grade targets steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) as primary workpiece materials, with superalloys and titanium listed as secondary applications. The medium machining chip breaker designation makes it well suited for general-purpose material removal at moderate feeds and depths, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.049 inches (1.25 mm). The KENLOC series insert is held in place by clamp and pin methods, which are standard on VNGP-style toolholders.
Designed for use in VNGP-style KENLOC series toolholders that accept clamp and pin insert retention. Conforms to ANSI insert code VNGP331 and ISO insert code VNGP160404, making it compatible with any toolholder designed to those standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and all energy sources locked out per applicable LOTO procedures before indexing or replacing inserts. Ensure the insert seat and clamp pocket are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the correct torque wrench for the clamp screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Inspect the insert seating and clamp engagement before resuming cutting operations.
