The KENNAMETAL 1160872 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation CNMP432 and ISO designation CNMP120408, designed for precision turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative rake and zero-degree relief angle, giving the cutting geometry four usable cutting edges. The KC730 grade carries a PVD-applied TiN coating engineered for high to moderate wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and superalloy workpiece materials. Insert length is 12.90 mm (0.5077 inches), inscribed circle is 0.5 inches, thickness is 0.1875 inches, and corner radius is 0.0313 inches. Part of the KENLOC series.
The 1160872 is suited for medium machining applications in both production and job-shop environments. Its primary workpiece materials are steel, stainless steel, and superalloys including titanium, with secondary suitability for additional stainless and superalloy grades. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both standard and live-tooling setups. Typical applications include external turning, face turning, and boring where consistent tool life and dimensional accuracy on difficult-to-machine alloys are required. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches), making this insert well-matched to finishing and light semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMP432 (ANSI) or CNMP120408 (ISO) turning inserts with clamp and pin holding. Suitable for multi-use applications including turning, facing, and boring on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces.
Turning insert installation and replacement is performed by licensed machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before changing inserts, shut down spindle rotation and verify the machine is in a safe, locked-out state per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces and tighten the clamp or pin fastener to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not over-tighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under uneven clamping load. Inspect the pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before each insert index.
