The KENNAMETAL 1160340 is a VNMG331P-style indexable turning insert in the KC850 grade, designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, this insert delivers a combination of wear resistance and toughness suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a sharp approach angle for profiling and finishing work. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius, it fits KENLOC-style toolholders and similar negative-rake clamping systems. Four usable cutting edges per insert contribute to cost-effective tool management in production environments.
This insert is rated for steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and special or super alloys (S) at moderate wear-resistance and toughness to high-toughness cutting conditions. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring on general-purpose and high-production lathes. The medium-machining chip breaker geometry handles a range of depths of cut up to approximately 0.05 inches (1.25 mm), making it a practical choice for roughing-to-finishing transitions. It is well suited to job shops, aerospace component machining, and automotive production lines where consistent tool life across varied workpiece materials is a priority.
Designed for use in KENLOC-style and other negative-rake toolholders accepting VNMG-style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and clamp-or-pin insert holding. Conforms to ANSI insert code VNMG331 and ISO insert code VNMG160404.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and de-energize the machine tool before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamp for wear or damage before seating a new insert to ensure proper clamping force and accurate edge positioning.
