The KENNAMETAL 1160302 is a TNMG431 grade KC850 solid carbide turning insert designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — applied over a carbide substrate for a balanced combination of wear resistance and toughness. The triangular insert shape provides 6 usable cutting edges with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.0156-inch corner radius, and a 0.5-inch inscribed circle diameter. Chip breaker geometry is rated for medium machining operations. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop turning applications.
The 1160302 insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, as well as select special and super alloys. Its KC850 grade targets applications requiring moderate wear resistance combined with moderate to high toughness — making it a practical choice for interrupted cuts and varied surface conditions. The KENLOC series uses a clamp-and-pin holding method. Insert length is 22 millimeters (0.8661 inches) and thickness is 0.1875 inches. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 millimeters (0.0492 inches).
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting TNMG431 inserts. Conforms to ANSI insert code TNMG431 and ISO insert code TNMG220404. Compatible with negative-rake, clamp-and-pin style insert pockets. Suitable for primary workpiece materials coded P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), and S (special and super alloys).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and confirm the pin and clamp are properly engaged before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or wear that could affect seating and edge position; a misseated insert can cause chatter, poor surface finish, or tool failure.
