The KENNAMETAL 1160184 is a CNMG431P-style turning insert in the KC850 grade, designed for metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — it delivers a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to moderate to high-demand cutting conditions. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative rake and negative side clearance, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0156 inch (1/64 inch) corner radius. The KENLOC series designation indicates compatibility with Kennametal KENLOC-style toolholders. Four cutting edges are available per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost in production environments. Cutting edge style is honed for consistent engagement.
The 1160184 is suited to turning, facing, and boring operations across a range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, and cast iron (ISO material groups P, M, K, and S). The P chip breaker geometry is engineered for medium machining conditions — moderate feed rates and depths of cut up to 1.25 mm (0.0492 inch). This insert is a practical choice for job shops and production machinists running general-purpose steel and stainless turning programs. It is held in the toolholder by clamp or pin, per standard CNMG toolholder practice.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series and standard CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch thick, negative-rake CNMG insert. Suitable for primary workpiece materials steel and stainless steel (ISO P and M), with rated performance also in cast iron and special or super alloys (ISO K and S).
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Verify the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips before seating; debris under the insert causes premature edge failure and runout. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification — do not over-torque. Index or replace the insert when flank wear reaches the threshold for your tolerance requirements rather than running to catastrophic failure.
