The KENNAMETAL 1160179 is a CNMG432 turning insert in the KC850 grade, designed for external and internal turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a solid carbide substrate with a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to medium machining conditions. It carries an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a negative rake and neutral hand, and four usable cutting edges. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches, the corner radius is 0.03125 inches, and the insert length is 12.9 mm (0.5077 inches). It belongs to the KENLOC series and conforms to ANSI insert code CNMG432 and ISO insert code CNMG120408.
This insert targets medium machining of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and special or super alloys in production turning environments. Typical applications include general turning and facing passes where moderate wear resistance and toughness are required simultaneously. The KC850 grade is classified for primary workpiece material codes P, M, K, and S, making it a versatile choice for shops running varied material types across the same tooling setup. The negative side clearance and chamfered, honed cutting edge style help manage cutting forces and edge stability during interrupted or continuous cuts.
Designed for KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMG432 (ISO CNMG120408) inserts with clamp or pin clamping. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping style before installation.
Turning insert replacement is performed by qualified machinists or tool-setting technicians with the machine in a full stop, spindle off, and all motion controls locked out per facility lockout-tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the clamp or pin; do not over-torque the clamping screw. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert, and verify insert orientation and hand before resuming cuts.
