Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 1160178 is a CNMG431 KC850-grade solid carbide turning insert designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN applied over a carbide substrate, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert has an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative rake and neutral hand, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0156 inch corner radius. It is part of the KENNAMETAL KENLOC series and is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 5 units.

This insert is engineered for medium machining chip-breaker operation and is suited for turning, facing, and boring applications. Primary workpiece materials include steel and stainless steel, with additional suitability for cast iron and special or super alloys. The four cutting edges and CNMG-style geometry make it an efficient choice for production turning environments where tool changes must be minimized. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops, automotive, and general manufacturing settings are the typical end users.

Key Features

  • Multilayer CVD coating (TiC, TiCN, TiN) for wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron
  • 80-degree diamond insert shape with negative rake and negative side clearance for secure clamping
  • Four usable cutting edges per insert extend tool life and reduce per-edge cost
  • Compatible with both clamp and pin holding methods in KENLOC-style toolholders
  • Maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inch (1.25 mm) for medium machining operations
  • Meets ANSI and ISO standards; ANSI code CNMG431, ISO code CNMG120404

Compatibility

Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders that accept CNMG-style inserts with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle and clamp or pin holding method. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping style before installation.

Installation Notes

Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamp or pin fastener per the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker geometry before resuming cuts. Do not exceed the rated depth of cut for the insert size and workpiece material combination.
