The KENNAMETAL 1160166 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for general-purpose and finishing lathe operations on CNC and manual turning centers. Carrying the ANSI code CNMG431 and ISO code CNMG120404, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN that delivers moderate wear resistance combined with high toughness. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a strong cutting edge geometry suited to a wide range of interrupted and continuous cuts. A 1/64-inch corner radius minimizes built-up edge while maintaining surface finish quality. The insert weighs 0.0201 pounds and belongs to the KENNAMETAL KENLOC series. It is held by clamp or pin and carries a negative rake, negative side clearance geometry.
This insert is used in turning operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and special or super alloys, covering primary workpiece material codes P, M, K, and S. Secondary applications include cast iron and stainless steel workpiece materials. The KC850 grade is engineered to handle moderate wear conditions while retaining enough toughness for variable stock, light interruptions, and general-purpose finishing passes. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and profiling on production lathes in job shop and production machining environments. Machinists and CNC operators performing turning operations on mixed-material workloads are the primary installers.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for KENLOC series toolholders accepting CNMG431 geometry inserts. ANSI insert code CNMG431 and ISO insert code CNMG120404 define the mechanical fit. Industry standard number TNMS331 may also apply for cross-reference purposes. Confirm toolholder seat geometry and clamping method before substitution.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked. Seat the insert fully into the pocket and verify the clamping screw or pin is torqued according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination can cause improper seating and premature edge failure. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements during insert changes.
