The KENNAMETAL 1114863 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the Top Notch series standard, this right-hand insert carries a KC850 grade carbide substrate with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN. The coating sequence delivers a combination of wear resistance and lubricity suited for continuous and interrupted cuts. At 1.58 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.18 mm, it handles light to moderate grooving passes in a compact insert profile. A full corner radius of 0.79 mm is ground into the cutting edge, and the neutral rake geometry keeps cutting forces predictable across a range of workpiece materials.
This insert is intended for use in ferrous and non-ferrous turning applications where groove width consistency and surface finish are critical. The KC850 grade targets ISO material grades C5 and C6, making it a common choice for medium to high-speed finishing and light roughing cuts in steel and cast iron. The Top Notch series tooling system is widely used in production environments where quick insert indexing and repeatable edge position are required. A licensed machinist or CNC setup technician performs the insert swap as part of routine tooling maintenance.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for Top Notch series grooving toolholders accepting NRD-style inserts in size 3031. Cross-reference manufacturer number NRD3031R/L for holder compatibility verification.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician with machine power off and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate Top Notch series clamping screw and torx key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper edge registration. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for the insert grade and coating selected.
