The KENNAMETAL 1113840 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous or interrupted cutting. It features a 4.78 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm, with a full corner radius of 2.39 mm and a neutral rake geometry. The KC850 grade targets ISO material groups C5 and C6, making it appropriate for machining cast irons and steels at moderate to high cutting speeds. Installed by machinists and toolroom technicians, this insert seats into compatible Top Notch toolholders.
This insert is suited for left-hand grooving applications on horizontal and slant-bed CNC lathes. The NR insert style and size 4094 geometry fit within the Top Notch toolholder system, which is commonly used in production and job-shop environments for part-off, groove, and turning operations. The neutral rake face supports consistent chip control across a range of feed rates. Typical applications include groove forming on shafts, bushings, and similar turned components in steel and cast iron workpiece materials.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders accepting insert seat size 4 and NR-style inserts in the 4094 size. Compatible with KC850 grade applications in ISO material groups C5 and C6.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Before seating the insert, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris. Verify insert orientation matches the left-hand designation of the toolholder before tightening the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure. Handle solid carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edge.
