The KENNAMETAL 1096948 is a right-hand indexable turning toolholder in the CTAP style, designed for use with TP..221 series inserts held by a top clamp mechanism. Built from steel, this toolholder features a 0.5 inch square shank and an overall length of 4.5 inches, making it suitable for external turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. It is part of the Kennametal Kendex series and is engineered for positive rake cutting at a 0-degree rake angle, which supports controlled chip formation and consistent insert seating during metal removal operations. Machinists and toolroom professionals typically specify this holder for light-to-medium turning applications.
This toolholder is used in external turning operations on CNC and conventional lathes where a right-hand cutting direction and positive rake geometry are required. The clamp-style insert retention is well-suited for production environments where inserts are changed frequently. The 0.5 inch shank height and width allow it to fit standard 0.5 inch boring bar pockets and toolpost blocks. The back-of-bar to cutting edge measurement is 0.5 inches, providing a known offset reference for tool presetting. Coolant-through capability is not available on this model.
Designed for use with TP..221 series indexable inserts featuring a 0.25 inch inscribed circle. Insert holding method is top clamp. Coolant-through tooling is not compatible with this holder.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Secure the shank fully within the toolpost or turret pocket to the specified depth before tightening clamping screws. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts or adjusting the toolholder. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when setting tool offsets and performing initial cuts.
