The KENNAMETAL 1096008 is a right-hand MTJN-style indexable turning toolholder designed for external turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a negative rake geometry and a Kenloc clamping system that secures TN..22. series inserts using a clamp and screw holding method. The shank measures 0.5 inches wide by 0.5 inches tall with an overall length of 4.5 inches. The 3-degree lead angle positions the insert for stable, predictable cutting in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Constructed from steel, this toolholder is built for repeated use in production turning environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this type of holder as part of a qualified tooling setup.
The 1096008 fits standard square-shank tool stations on engine lathes, turret lathes, and CNC turning centers that accept a 0.5-inch by 0.5-inch shank. It is suited for both roughing and finishing passes where a negative-rake insert geometry provides edge strength and longer tool life. The back-of-bar to cutting edge dimension is 0.625 inches, which determines insert centerline height when setting tool height at the spindle centerline. This holder is appropriate for job shop, production, and maintenance turning applications.
Designed to accept TN..22. series indexable inserts (complete compatibility reference: TN.. 221) with a 0.25-inch inscribed circle. Fits tool stations accepting a 0.5-inch by 0.5-inch square shank.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the lathe spindle before changing inserts or mounting the toolholder. Set tool height so the cutting edge aligns with the spindle centerline, using the 0.625-inch back-of-bar to cutting edge dimension as a reference. Torque the clamp screw to the insert manufacturer specification printed on the insert packaging or tooling documentation — do not estimate torque by feel.
