The KENNAMETAL 1017748 is a tension and compression tapping chuck designed for precision tapping operations in CNC machining centers and rigid tapping setups. It features a 1 inch straight shank for direct spindle mounting and accepts taps up to 5/8 inch capacity through its K-series double angle tap collet system. The chuck projects 1.4688 inches from the spindle face, keeping the tap close to the work for improved rigidity. With a nose diameter of 1.06 inches and built-in tension of 0.56 inches and compression of 0.19 inches, it compensates for minor feed rate mismatches between the spindle and the tap, reducing tap breakage and extending tool life.
This tapping chuck is suited for production and job-shop environments where machine tapping is performed on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar machinable materials. It is intended for use in vertical and horizontal machining centers equipped with a 1 inch straight shank tool holder interface. The K-series collet system accommodates a minimum collet capacity of No. 0 or 1/16 inch pipe tap (M1 metric) and a maximum of 5/8 inch or 1/8 inch pipe tap (M16 metric), covering a wide range of tap sizes in a single chuck body. Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician as part of a tool presetting or setup routine.
Designed as an OEM-style tapping chuck for use with K-series double angle tap collets in machining center applications requiring a 1 inch straight shank interface.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before mounting or removing the chuck. Ensure the shank bore and chuck shank are clean and free of chips or burrs before seating. Select the appropriate K-series collet for the tap shank diameter and torque the collet nut according to the collet manufacturer's specifications before running.
