The KENNAMETAL 1016658 is a Series L double angle tap collet designed for use in tapping chucks and collet-style tap holders. It accepts hand tap shanks with a collet size of 0.48 inches and a square drive size of 0.36 inches, providing a secure grip on the tap during threading operations. The double angle design delivers consistent radial accuracy, with a total indicator runout (TIR) of 0.001 inches (0.03 mm), helping maintain thread quality and extend tap life. This collet is intended for hand tap applications and does not support through-coolant or tension-compression float.
This collet is suited for manual and machine tapping operations in metalworking and machining environments, including job shops, tool rooms, and production floors. It fits into compatible Series L tap holders used on vertical machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. The 0.48-inch collet size is matched to 5/8-inch hand tap shanks, making it a direct-fit component for that tap size range. Machinists and toolroom technicians performing threading work on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar workpiece materials are the primary users.
Designed for use with Series L tap holders that accept double angle collets. Compatible with 5/8-inch hand tap shanks having a 0.36-inch square drive. Consult your tap holder documentation to confirm Series L collet fitment before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with tap holder systems. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing collets. Seat the collet fully into the holder before tightening the collet nut to the holder manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the collet bore and seating surfaces for chips or debris prior to assembly, as contamination will degrade TIR performance.
