The JOHNSON CONTROLS RAA-8-X is a center averaging flow probe kit designed for round damper applications in commercial and industrial HVAC air distribution systems. The probe measures airflow velocity across the duct cross-section by sampling multiple points simultaneously, producing an averaged pressure signal that reflects actual flow conditions. It is rated for velocity ranges of 400 to 5,000 feet per minute (FPM) with an accuracy of 5 percent, and it handles air temperatures up to 120 degrees F. This kit ships without an actuator or differential pressure transmitter, making it suitable for installations where those components are already specified or procured separately. Licensed HVAC controls technicians and mechanical contractors are the primary installers.
The RAA-8-X is intended for round duct or round damper installations with an 8-inch diameter. Typical applications include air handling unit discharge sections, VAV system branch ducts, outdoor air intake measurement stations, and laboratory or cleanroom airflow monitoring points. The center averaging design is well suited to commercial ventilation systems where single-point pitot measurements would produce unreliable readings due to non-uniform velocity profiles. Because no actuator or differential pressure transmitter is included, the installing contractor must supply those components to complete the airflow measurement or control assembly.
Designed as an OEM-style flow measurement component for round duct and damper assemblies with an 8-inch diameter, intended for use in commercial HVAC air distribution and ventilation control systems where a separate actuator and differential pressure transmitter will be field-supplied.
Installation should be performed by a licensed HVAC controls technician or mechanical contractor familiar with airflow measurement stations and duct penetration requirements. Power down and de-energize all associated air handling equipment and control circuits before beginning installation. Locate the probe in a duct section with adequate straight-run upstream and downstream to minimize turbulence and ensure accurate velocity averaging. Connect the high and low pressure ports to a separately procured differential pressure transmitter following the transmitter manufacturer's piping instructions; do not obstruct or cap either port.
