The JACOBS 30428DN is a standard Morse taper reducing sleeve designed to adapt an MT4 inside taper to an MT5 outside taper. It allows a tool or arbor with a Number 4 Morse taper shank to seat properly in a machine spindle or quill bored to a Number 5 Morse taper. The sleeve is constructed with a soft body and hardened tang, which protects the drive engagement point while keeping the sleeve body machinable if adjustment is needed. Overall length is 6.69 inches (169.93mm) with a 0.75 inch projection. This part is installed by machinists, tool and die technicians, and maintenance mechanics working with drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and similar machine tool spindles.
Morse taper reducing sleeves like the 30428DN are used wherever a mismatch exists between a tool shank taper and a machine spindle taper. Common applications include drill presses and lathes in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance environments. The sleeve seats into the MT5 spindle bore and accepts any MT4 tool or accessory, eliminating the need to re-bore the spindle or source alternative tooling. The hardened tang supports positive drive and clean ejection with a drift key.
Designed as an OEM-style reducing sleeve for machine tool spindles bored to MT5 that require MT4 tooling compatibility.
Installation is performed by machinists or qualified maintenance mechanics. Power down and lock out the machine before inserting or removing the sleeve. Clean both the spindle bore and the outside taper of the sleeve before seating to prevent fretting and ensure full taper contact. Use a proper drift key and soft mallet to eject the sleeve - never strike the spindle housing directly.
