The JACKSON SAFETY 14771 is a mechanical contour marker designed for laying out structural steel, pipe joints, and fittings without complex math or trial-and-error cutting. The tool features an X-shaped frame, a calibrated angle protractor, a triple-jointed marker arm, and an adjustable bracket that work together to position a soapstone crayon accurately on curved or flat surfaces. It handles pipe diameters from 1.5 inches to 18 inches and structural steel members up to 18 inches. Pipefitters, plumbers, and ironworkers use this tool to speed up layout work and reduce material waste on structural and piping assemblies.
The 14771 is suited for residential and commercial piping installations, structural steel fabrication, and mechanical room rough-in work. It supports lateral layouts at any angle and accommodates tees, wyes, crosses, and elbows of any type or size. The tool operates equally well right-side up or upside down, making it practical for overhead or confined-space work. A soapstone crayon is included with each unit.
Designed for use on round pipe, structural steel pipe, and tubular members ranging from 1.5 inches to 18 inches in diameter, covering common joint configurations including tees, wyes, crosses, and elbows of any angle or size.
Typically used by pipefitters, plumbers, and structural ironworkers during the layout and fabrication phase before cutting. No power source is required. Secure the workpiece before marking to prevent movement that could affect layout accuracy. Follow applicable codes such as the International Plumbing Code or International Fuel Gas Code for joint-type and material requirements before cutting.
