The ISCAR 6405238 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured under ISCAR's Cut-Grip series, it carries the GIP318020P insert style designation with an IC8250 grade coating applied via PVD process over an Al2O3 finish. The insert delivers a 3.18 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 13.00 mm. With a positive rake angle of 7 degrees and a corner radius of 0.20 mm, it is engineered for controlled chip formation when machining stainless steel and steel workpieces. A double-end configuration extends usable tool life. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop turning environments.
This insert is suited for grooving and cut-off applications on stainless steel and steel components in both production and precision machining settings. The P chip breaker geometry is optimized for steel-family materials, making it appropriate for medium-duty turning operations where consistent chip control and surface finish are required. The clamp-style insert holding method integrates with compatible Cut-Grip toolholders designed for the GIP insert series. Applications include groove turning on shafts, fittings, and cylindrical components where tight dimensional tolerances are maintained.
Designed for use with Cut-Grip series clamp-style toolholders compatible with GIP insert geometry. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and steel, corresponding to ISO material codes M and P. Consult ISCAR toolholder selection data using the GIP318020P insert designation to confirm holder compatibility before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified clamping screw and torque driver to secure the insert in the toolholder pocket; do not substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure proper insert registration and repeatability.
