The ISCAR 6404270 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. It carries ISCAR grade IC808 with a PVD-applied AlTiN, TiAlN, and TiN multilayer coating, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 4 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 14 mm, and a 2 mm full corner radius. With a neutral hand orientation and positive 8-degree rake angle, it suits both right- and left-hand holders in the Cut-Grip clamping system. Machinists and CNC operators install this insert in production turning applications.
This insert is rated for universal primary workpiece material compatibility, covering ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S — meaning it handles hardened materials, cast iron, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, and superalloys within appropriate cutting parameters. The double-end design provides two usable cutting edges per insert, making it suitable for high-volume grooving cycles where tool economy matters. Typical applications include external groove turning, face grooving, and parting on bar-fed or chucked workpieces in job shop and production environments.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series clamping toolholders that accept the GIFI insert style in size code 400E200. No specific holder model numbers were provided in the product data; consult ISCAR toolholder selection guides to confirm holder compatibility before ordering.
A qualified machinist or CNC operator should install grooving inserts with the machine spindle fully stopped and all energy sources locked out per OSHA lockout-tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully into the Cut-Grip clamp pocket and verify the clamp screw is torqued per the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seating surface for chips or debris before each edge change, as contamination can affect edge height and groove width accuracy. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification for this insert geometry.
