The ISCAR 6400549 is a solid carbide grooving insert from the Cut-Grip series, designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This double-ended insert carries manufacturer grade IC20, an uncoated solid carbide grade suited for universal workpiece materials. It delivers a cutting width of 1.96 mm and a maximum depth of cut of 3.00 mm, with a positive rake angle of 7 degrees and a corner radius of 0.15 mm. The neutral hand orientation makes it straightforward to position in compatible Cut-Grip toolholders without favoring a left or right cut direction. It is installed by machinists and CNC turning technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is applied in grooving, parting, and profile turning operations across a broad range of workpiece materials. Its primary workpiece material compatibility spans multiple ISO material groups, including cast iron, stainless steel, steel, non-ferrous metals, and heat-resistant superalloys, corresponding to ISO codes H, K, M, N, and S. The double-end design extends usable tool life per insert, making it a practical choice in high-volume turning applications where minimizing insert changeover time matters. It is well suited for light to medium grooving passes in both production turning and tool-room work.

Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and all energy sources locked out per your facility lockout-tagout procedure. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping mechanism for debris or wear before seating the insert to ensure proper contact and prevent micro-movement during cutting. Use the torque specification provided by the toolholder manufacturer for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide body. Consult your toolholder documentation and applicable shop safety standards before returning the machine to service.
