The ISCAR 5601223 is a square milling insert carrying the ANSI designation XPMT 100408-HQ in grade IC328, designed for high-productivity face and shoulder milling operations. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide and features a PVD-applied TiCN coating that improves wear resistance and edge retention across demanding cutting cycles. It belongs to the HELIQUAD series, which uses a helical cutting edge geometry with a positive rake angle to reduce cutting forces and lower heat generation at the cutting zone. The insert measures 0.4020 inches across the inscribed circle and 0.1620 inches thick, with a 0.0236-inch corner radius. Four usable cutting edges per insert are available, making it an efficient consumable for production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium in both roughing and semi-finishing applications. The HQ chip breaker geometry is optimized for these workpiece materials, providing controlled chip flow in interrupted and continuous cuts. Typical applications include shoulder milling, ramping, and helical interpolation on vertical and horizontal machining centers. The insert is compatible with ISCAR HELIQUAD cutter bodies from the ETS, FDN, FSB, FST, SDN, SSB, E90AC, SPK, F90SP-10, and E90SP series, making it usable across a broad range of toolholder platforms already present in many shops.

Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per standard lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer when seating the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface and screw threads for chips or debris before installing a new edge. Confirm runout and axial positioning after indexing before resuming cutting.
