The ISCAR 5550498 is a solid carbide turning insert with the ISO designation VCMT 331-SM, designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and machining centers. Manufactured to the VCMT insert style, it features a 35-degree diamond shape with a positive rake geometry and a 7-degree relief angle. The IC807 grade substrate uses a submicron carbide composition and carries a PVD-applied TiN and TiAlN multilayer coating for heat resistance and extended tool life. The insert measures 16.61 mm (0.654 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius. It is held in place by a screw clamp and is part of the Isoturn series. Installation is performed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians.
This insert is suited for a broad range of workpiece materials as indicated by its primary material codes: H (hardened materials), K (cast iron), M (stainless steel), P (steel), and S (heat-resistant superalloys). Its SM chip breaker geometry is optimized for light to medium finishing cuts. The boring capability listed under multi-use application makes it applicable to both turning and boring operations. The positive rake design reduces cutting forces, making it appropriate for slender workpieces or setups with limited rigidity. Maximum depth of cut is 2.49 mm (0.098 inches).
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for toolholders and boring bars accepting VCMT 331 style inserts with screw-clamp retention. Compatible with workpiece material groups H, K, M, P, and S as defined by ISO material coding. Conforms to ISO 13399 insert identification standards.
This insert is installed and indexed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key specified for the toolholder clamp screw and avoid overtightening, which can crack the insert or damage the pocket seating surface. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamp screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
