The ISCAR 5550495 is a VCMT 220-SM solid carbide turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Coated with TiAlN and TiN via a PVD process, it carries ISCAR grade IC807 and features a submicron carbide substrate for edge toughness and wear resistance. The 35-degree diamond (V) shape delivers a sharp, positive rake geometry, while the SM chip breaker promotes controlled chip formation across a wide range of cutting conditions. The inscribed circle measures 0.25 inches (0.2500 inches decimal), insert length is 0.437 inches (11.10 mm), and insert thickness is 0.125 inches. Corner radius is 0.0079 inches and the maximum depth of cut is 0.0984 inches (2.50 mm). Screw-held mounting with a 7-degree relief angle rounds out the geometry profile.
The 5550495 is rated for universal primary workpiece materials, covering ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S. This includes carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous materials, and high-temperature alloys. The insert belongs to the ISCAR Isoturn series and conforms to ISO 13399 standards, making it compatible with ISO-coded toolholders across turning platforms. Typical applications include finish to semi-finish turning passes where controlled chip flow and consistent edge geometry are critical. It is suited for production environments running automated CNC cycles as well as repair shop single-point turning work.
Designed for use in VCMT-style ISO-coded toolholders with a screw-on insert pocket. Tolerance code M and clearance code C define the seating geometry. Compatible across ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S per ISO 13399. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against insert size code 220 before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamping screw to avoid micro-fractures at the cutting edge. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification for the insert geometry; doing so risks premature edge failure or insert breakage.
