The ISCAR 5550405 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries the SCMT431-14 designation and is manufactured to the IC8250 grade, featuring a CVD-applied TiCN plus Al2O3 multilayer coating for wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The square insert shape with a 90-degree included angle and a positive rake geometry provides efficient chip control across a range of steel and stainless steel workpiece materials. It fits the Isoturn series tooling system and is secured by screw clamping. The 0.0157 inch corner radius suits general-purpose finishing and medium turning passes.
This insert is suited for turning operations in both production and job-shop environments. The IC8250 grade with its CVD TiCN and Al2O3 coating is engineered primarily for machining ISO P workpiece materials (steels) with secondary suitability for ISO M materials (stainless steels). Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and profiling on CNC turning centers where consistent tool life and surface finish are priorities. It is installed in compatible SCMT-style insert pockets within the Isoturn tooling system.
Designed for use in SCMT-style insert pockets within the ISCAR Isoturn series tooling system. Insert holding method is screw clamping. Refer to ISCAR tooling catalogs for compatible toolholder designations matching the SCMT 431 pocket specification.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value. Inspect the insert pocket seat and shim for damage or debris before seating the new insert, as a contaminated pocket can cause premature insert failure or poor surface finish.
