The ISCAR 5540016 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert in the VCGT 221-AS geometry, part of the Isoturn series. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, designed specifically for finishing operations. The 0.4 mm (0.0157 inch) corner radius and 0.250-inch inscribed circle make it well-suited to precision turning applications where tight tolerances and fine surface finishes are required. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators working with stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, and other non-ferrous materials will find this insert effective across a range of workpiece materials. The IC20 uncoated carbide grade delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness.
This insert is intended for finishing passes on CNC and manual lathes in both production and job-shop environments. The VCGT 221-AS chip breaker geometry is optimized for light to moderate depth-of-cut finishing work, with a maximum depth of cut of 3.00 mm (0.118 inch). It performs across universal primary workpiece material categories including steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous (N), and heat-resistant superalloys (S). It is appropriate for both high-volume production turning and precision prototype work where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for Isoturn series toolholders accepting VCGT 221 geometry inserts with a 0.114-inch hole diameter. Confirm toolholder pocket specifications before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for wear or debris before installing a new insert to ensure proper seating and accurate tool geometry.
