The ISCAR 5509898 is a VCMT-style solid carbide turning insert carrying the IC806 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating. Designed for the Isoturn series, this insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V code), a positive rake geometry, and an SM chip breaker optimized for controlled chip flow during finishing and semi-finishing operations. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inches (0.375 inches decimal), insert length is 0.6535 inches (16.60 mm), and the corner radius is 1/64 inches (0.0156 inches decimal). Insert thickness is 3/16 inches. The IC806 submicron carbide substrate combined with the TiAlN PVD coating delivers hardness retention and thermal resistance suited to demanding cutting applications.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining superalloys (ISO material code S), making it a direct fit for aerospace, power generation, and oil-and-gas components where high-temperature alloys such as nickel-based and titanium alloys are common. It is held via screw clamping and carries tolerance code M with clearance code C (7-degree relief angle). The maximum depth of cut is 0.0984 inches (2.50 mm). Machinists working on CNC turning centers and manual lathes requiring a sharp, positive-rake geometry for difficult-to-machine materials will find this insert well suited to finishing passes where edge integrity and surface finish are critical.
Designed for use in VCMT-style screw-clamp turning toolholders within the ISCAR Isoturn series. Primary workpiece material is superalloy (ISO code S). Consult ISCAR toolholder selection guides for compatible insert pocket specifications matching the VCMT 331 insert size code.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine fully powered down and all axes locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating procedure — do not overtighten the clamping screw, as this can fracture the carbide insert body. Verify insert seating and pocket cleanliness before resuming cutting operations. Handle carbide inserts with care; edges are brittle and can chip if dropped or impacted.
