The ISCAR 5508542 is a VNMG-style solid carbide turning insert in the Isoturn series, designed for precision single-point turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of cutting speeds. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V shape code), a positive rake geometry, and an NF chip breaker suited for finishing passes. Insert length is 12.40 mm (0.4882 inches), inscribed circle is 0.2815 inches (7.15 mm), and the corner radius is 1/64 inch (0.0157 inches). Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops and production environments install this insert type.
This insert is intended for turning stainless steel and carbon/alloy steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes M and P. The NF chip breaker geometry and positive rake angle make it well suited for finishing and light roughing cuts, with a maximum depth of cut of 2.00 mm (0.0787 inches). It is used in clamp- and pin-style insert holders that accept the VNMG insert style with an N clearance code and M tolerance code. Typical applications include turning shafts, flanges, and precision cylindrical components where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities.
Designed for use in VNMG-style insert holders that accept an N clearance code and M tolerance code. Compatible with clamp and pin insert holding methods. Suitable for machining stainless steel (ISO material code M) and carbon and alloy steel (ISO material code P). Part of the ISCAR Isoturn series.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or tool room technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces and torque the clamp or pin fastener according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide. Verify insert orientation and chip breaker direction relative to the programmed feed direction before resuming cuts.
