The ISCAR 5508214 is a solid carbide turning insert in the Isoturn series, designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the ISO designation DCMT 3-2-SM and is finished with a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert features a 55-degree diamond shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The SM chip breaker geometry is optimized for positive-rake cutting action. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible screw-lock toolholders for steel and cast iron applications.
This insert is suited for finish to medium turning passes on steel and cast iron workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes P and K. The positive rake and SM chip breaker support controlled chip formation during continuous and lightly interrupted cuts. It is commonly applied in production turning environments where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The screw-clamp holding method provides rigid, repeatable seating. Maximum depth of cut is 3.00 mm (0.118 inches), making it appropriate for finishing and semi-finishing passes rather than heavy roughing.
Designed for use with DCMT-style screw-lock toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). Also rated for boring applications as a multi-use insert. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and ISO code DCMT 3-2-SM against your toolholder specification before installation.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque before resuming cuts. Inspect the pocket and screw threads for wear or debris each time the insert is indexed or replaced.
