The ISCAR 5508172 is a VNMG332TF-style solid carbide turning insert with an IC8150 manufacturer grade, designed for precision turning and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. The insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance, wear resistance, and reduced built-up edge. At 0.654 inches in length with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and a 1/32 inch corner radius, this insert fits standard VNMG toolholders and handles depths of cut up to 0.138 inches. The TF chip breaker geometry promotes positive rake cutting and reliable chip control. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for turning and boring applications on cast iron and steel workpieces, covering ISO material groups K and P. The positive rake geometry and TF chip breaker make it effective across a range of finishing and semi-finishing passes where chip control and surface finish are priorities. The VNMG 35-degree diamond shape provides a strong nose geometry with a clear approach angle, making it a practical choice for both external turning and internal boring on medium to large-diameter bores. It is rated for multi-use applications and fits into standard VNMG clamp-and-pin toolholding systems.
Designed for use in standard VNMG clamp-and-pin toolholders. Fits toolholders configured for a 3/8 inch inscribed circle VNMG insert with a 3/16 inch insert thickness. ISO code VNMG 332-TF. Compatible with primary workpiece materials in ISO groups K (cast iron) and P (steel).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are free of chips and debris before installing the insert, as contamination affects seating accuracy and can cause premature edge failure. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for the clamp screw; do not overtighten, as this can fracture the insert body.
