The ISCAR 5508146 is a VNMG332TF grade IC8250 solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. The insert features a CVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 multilayer coating that provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. The 35-degree diamond shape (V) with a positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces on the workpiece. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius, this insert suits medium to moderate finishing passes. It is seated and held by clamp and pin methods and is installed by machinists and tool-room technicians in production environments.
This insert is suited for turning ferrous materials, with a primary workpiece material designation of P (steel) and a secondary designation of M (stainless steel), making it applicable across a broad range of industrial turning jobs. The Isoturn series geometry is engineered for reliable chip control and consistent surface finish in steel and stainless turning applications. The TF chip breaker designation supports controlled chip formation at moderate feed rates and depths of cut up to 3.50 mm (0.1378 inches). Typical use cases include shaft turning, facing, and profile turning on production lathes in job shops and manufacturing facilities.
Designed for use in VNMG-style toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, 35-degree diamond turning inserts with clamp and pin retention. Compatible with toolholders conforming to ISO 13399 specifications. Verify holder pocket geometry and clearance code N (zero-degree relief) requirements before installation.
Turning insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool-room technician with the machine in a locked-out, powered-down state. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for debris or wear before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque — do not over-tighten, as this can fracture the insert. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
