The ISCAR 5508088 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT21SM geometry, designed for single-end turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the IC8250 manufacturer grade with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, delivering thermal resistance and wear protection across a range of ferrous cutting conditions. The 80-degree diamond insert shape provides a strong cutting edge with a 7-degree relief angle and a positive rake, reducing cutting forces and heat generation. Intended for installation and replacement by machinists and CNC tooling technicians, this insert fits standard CCMT-compatible toolholders and conforms to ISO 13399 standards.
This insert is rated for primary use on stainless steel and steel workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes M and P. The SM chip breaker geometry is suited for light to moderate depth-of-cut applications, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.098 inches (2.49 mm). Typical applications include finish and semi-finish turning on production and job-shop lathes where consistent chip control and surface finish are required. The screw-clamping insert holding method ensures positive seating in compatible toolholders during high-cycle production runs.

Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine spindle stopped and all axes locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating a new insert. Do not use damaged or chipped inserts, as this can cause workpiece defects or tool ejection during cutting.
