Product Description

The ISCAR 5506717 is an ICM0980 series replaceable-tip carbide drill designed for demanding hole-making operations in difficult-to-machine materials. The cutting tip is manufactured from submicron solid carbide in grade IC908 and finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating to resist heat and extend tool life in high-temperature alloys. The drill body accepts the ICM-series tip using a twist-lock holding method. With a 0.98-inch cutting diameter, a 140-degree included point angle, a web-thinned point geometry, and a slow-spiral, T-land flute configuration, this tool is built for controlled chip evacuation and reduced thrust in tough stock. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.

The ICM0980 is applied in CNC machining centers, turning centers with live tooling, and dedicated drilling machines. Its primary workpiece materials are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, making it a direct fit for aerospace, medical, and energy-sector part production. Secondary material compatibility covers steel, cast iron, and hard materials. The slow-spiral flute geometry helps manage chip packing when drilling deep holes in gummy, work-hardening alloys. The insert seat size is 24, matching compatible ICM-series drill bodies in that seat class.

Key Features

  • Submicron solid carbide tip in grade IC908 for high edge toughness in superalloys and titanium
  • TiAlN PVD coating provides oxidation resistance and thermal hardness at elevated cutting temperatures
  • 140-degree web-thinned point reduces thrust and improves centering on entry
  • Slow-spiral, T-land flute design optimized for controlled chip flow in work-hardening materials
  • Twist-lock replaceable-tip system allows tip changes without removing the drill body from the spindle
  • Conforms to ISO 13399 tooling data standards for CAM and toolsetting system integration

Compatibility

Designed for use with ICM-series drill bodies accepting insert seat size 24. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material groups M and S). Secondary workpiece materials include steel, cast iron, and hard materials (ISO groups P, K, and H). ISO number ICM 249 applies to this tip geometry.

Installation Notes

Replaceable-tip drills in this series are installed and removed using the twist-lock interface specified by ISCAR for ICM-series bodies. Always ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing the cutting tip. Verify the tip is fully seated and locked before initiating a cut. Follow the machine tool builder and cutting tool manufacturer guidelines for runout tolerances and clamping torque when qualifying a new tip.
