The ISCAR 5506174 is a WBMT-style solid carbide turning insert designed for precision lathe and turning center operations. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this left-hand insert carries an IC908 manufacturer grade and is built for demanding material removal across multiple workpiece material groups. The inscribed circle measures 5/32 inches (0.1563 inches decimal), the corner radius is 0.004 inches, and the included angle is 80 degrees, forming a trigon insert shape. The positive rake geometry and T-style chipbreaker support consistent chip control during finish and semi-finish turning passes. Part of the Isoturn series, this insert is held in place by screw clamping and conforms to ISO 13399 standards.
This insert is suited for turning applications across a broad range of workpiece materials, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and high-temperature superalloys, corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S, with secondary emphasis on H and S materials. The left-hand orientation makes it appropriate for specific toolholder configurations where right-to-left cutting direction is required. Typical applications include external turning and profiling on CNC lathes and turning centers in both job shop and production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers and users of this insert.
Designed as an OEM Isoturn series replacement insert for WBMT-style screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 5/32-inch inscribed circle, left-hand turning insert. Verify toolholder seat geometry and pocket size before installation. The manufacturers catalog number for this insert is WBMT520L.
CNC machinists and tool-crib technicians install turning inserts of this type. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque screwdriver or Torx key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw — do not overtighten. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear, damage, or carbide debris before seating the new insert.
