The ISCAR 5505696 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VCMT 220-SM IC908 configuration, designed for precision turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a 0.2 mm (0.0079 inch) corner radius, a positive rake geometry, and a positive side clearance angle of 7 degrees. The insert carries IC908 grade designation and is finished with a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The SM chip breaker is rated for finishing through medium machining applications. Machinists and CNC operators working in precision turning will find this insert suited for controlled, consistent cut depths up to 2.50 mm (0.098 inch).
This insert is part of the ISCAR Isoturn series and is designed for external and internal turning applications where tight tolerances and surface finish quality are priorities. The VCMT geometry with positive rake and clearance angles reduces cutting forces, making it effective for finishing passes on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and special or super alloys. The SM chip breaker geometry supports consistent chip control during light to medium depth passes. This insert is typically installed by CNC machinists and tool and die professionals working in job shop, production, or aerospace-class machining environments.
Designed for use in VCMT-style turning insert pockets conforming to ANSI insert code VCMT220 and ISO insert code VCMT110301. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 0.250 inch inscribed circle, 0.114 inch hole diameter, tolerance code M, and clearance code C geometry per ISO and ANSI standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and all axes are at a safe position before changing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and screw size specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert — do not over-tighten, as this can damage the insert pocket or fracture the carbide. Verify insert seating and runout before resuming cutting operations.
