The ISCAR 5505049 is a carbide replaceable tip drill insert in the IDI-SG series, designed for high-productivity drilling in ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from submicron solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this tip delivers thermal resistance and edge retention in demanding cutting conditions. The IC908 grade targets interrupted cuts, hard materials, and work-hardening alloys. The SG insert geometry includes web thinning at the point, reducing thrust forces and improving centering at entry. Cutting diameter is 0.583 inches, with a functional length of 0.162 inches and an overall projection height of 0.268 inches. Two spiral flutes in a slow-spiral configuration support chip evacuation. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this tip type in compatible IDI-SG drill bodies.
This replaceable tip is suited for drilling operations in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, covering ISO material groups P, M, K, S, and H. The general-purpose style makes it appropriate for production drilling on CNC machining centers and lathes where repeatability and insert changeover speed matter. The twist-style insert holding method locks the tip into the body without additional fasteners, enabling quick tip changes at the spindle without removing the body from the toolholder. Applications are strictly drilling; this tip is not intended for milling or reaming operations.
Designed as a replaceable tip insert for ISCAR IDI-SG series drill bodies using insert seat size 14, ISO number IDI 148-SG. Confirm body series and seat size before ordering. Coolant-through bodies are not required, as this tip does not feature internal coolant channels.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or tool-room technicians. Before changing the tip, bring the spindle to a full stop and lock out the machine per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the tip fully into the body using the twist engagement method and verify it is flush and locked before resuming cutting. Do not exceed the cutting parameters recommended for the IC908 grade and the specific workpiece material group.
