The ISCAR 5504879 is a WNMG-style solid carbide turning insert in the Isoturn series, designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries a dual PVD coating of TiAlN and TiN under grade IC907, suited for demanding cutting conditions including interrupted cuts and high-temperature alloys. It features an 80-degree trigon shape with a positive rake geometry, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The NF chip breaker geometry supports finishing to near-finishing passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as part of standard indexable tooling systems.
This insert is rated for primary workpiece materials classified under ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, general steels, non-ferrous materials, carbon steels, and high-temperature alloys including superalloys and titanium. The Isoturn series positioning makes it appropriate for general-purpose turning applications in both production-shop and job-shop environments. Typical use cases include finish turning of shaft components, housing bores, and similar rotational parts where consistent edge life and dimensional accuracy are required.
Designed for use in WNMG-style indexable turning toolholders that accept clamp-and-pin retention. Compatible toolholders must accommodate a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 0.150-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamp style before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down or E-stop the machine and confirm spindle is fully stopped before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure when seating the clamp screw - do not overtighten. Inspect the pocket seat and clamp for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
